What Is Long Division?
Long division is a written method for dividing one multi-digit number by another, working through the dividend one digit (or digit group) at a time: divide, multiply, subtract, and bring down the next digit, repeating until done. It's the standard hand method for division problems too large to do in one step mentally.
Example
847 ÷ 5 using long division: 8÷5=1 remainder 3, bring down 4 to make 34, 34÷5=6 remainder 4, bring down 7 to make 47, 47÷5=9 remainder 2. The result is 169 remainder 2.
