What Is Point-Slope Form?
Point-slope form writes a line's equation using its slope (m) and the coordinates of one known point on the line (x₁, y₁): y − y₁ = m(x − x₁). It's especially useful when you know a point and a slope but don't yet know the y-intercept needed for slope-intercept form.
Example
A line through the point (2, 5) with a slope of 3 is written in point-slope form as y − 5 = 3(x − 2), which simplifies to y = 3x − 1.
