How a Weighted Grade Is Calculated

Multiply each category's score by its weight, add those together, then divide by the total weight.

Worked example

Homework is 20% at a 90% score, Tests are 50% at 85%, and the Final is 30% at 78%.

(0.20 × 90) + (0.50 × 85) + (0.30 × 78) = 18 + 42.5 + 23.4 = 83.9

Final grade: 83.9% (B)

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you calculate a final grade from weighted categories?

Multiply each category's score by its weight, add the results together, then divide by the total weight. This gives more influence to categories worth more of the final grade.

Do the category weights have to add up to 100%?

Ideally yes, since weights are usually written as percentages of the total grade. This calculator still works even if they don't add up exactly, by dividing by the actual total weight entered.

What percentage is each letter grade?

This calculator uses the common US scale: 90% and above is an A, 80-89% is a B, 70-79% is a C, 60-69% is a D, and below 60% is an F. Individual schools sometimes use different cutoffs.
