Roman Numerals for 1 to 100, Round Numbers and Years

Every number from 1 to 100, the round hundreds and the years 2020 to 2030, written in Roman numerals. Open any entry to see how the numeral is built one place value at a time.

The rules in one minute

  • Seven letters carry the values: I is 1, V is 5, X is 10, L is 50, C is 100, D is 500 and M is 1,000.
  • Write the largest value first and add the rest, so 87 is LXXXVII: 50 + 10 + 10 + 10 + 5 + 1 + 1.
  • A smaller letter placed before a larger one is subtracted, so 4 is IV, 9 is IX, 40 is XL and 90 is XC. Only I, X and C are used this way.
  • The same letter is never repeated more than three times in a row, which is why 4 is IV and not IIII.

Recent years

Years are written the same way, one place value at a time, which is why they are popular for dates on cakes, tattoos and cornerstones.
