Ordering Numbers

Compare each pair of numbers and arrange them so the list steadily increases (or decreases, for greatest-to-least order).

Comparing mixed types takes an extra step. To order fractions like 3/4 and 5/8 alongside a decimal like 0.7, convert everything to the same form first — as decimals, 3/4 = 0.75 and 5/8 = 0.625, so the order from least to greatest is 5/8, 0.7, 3/4.

Worked example

Order 8, 3, 15, 1, 9, 3 from least to greatest.

Result: 1, 3, 3, 8, 9, 15

A second example, with negatives and a decimal: order −4, 2.5, −4.2, 0, 7.

Result: −4.2, −4, 0, 2.5, 7

Common mistake

With negative numbers, it's easy to treat the larger-looking digit as the larger value. −8 is actually less than −3, even though 8 is a bigger digit than 3, because −8 sits farther to the left on the number line.

What's the difference between ascending and descending order?

Ascending (least to greatest) goes from smallest to largest. Descending (greatest to least) goes the other way, from largest to smallest.

How do you compare negative numbers?

The negative number closer to zero is greater. −2 is greater than −7, because −2 is only 2 units below zero while −7 is 7 units below zero — the opposite of how positive numbers compare.

How do you order a mix of fractions and decimals?

Convert everything to the same form first, usually decimals. 3/4 and 5/8 compare easily once you know 3/4 = 0.75 and 5/8 = 0.625, rather than trying to compare the fractions directly.
