Divide the numerator by the denominator. The whole-number quotient stays out front, and the remainder becomes the new numerator over the same denominator.
The denominator never changes during a conversion in either direction — only the numerator and whole number shift. And if the fraction part of a mixed number isn't already in lowest terms, simplify it the same way you would any fraction: 2 6/8 should be written as 2 3/4, since the GCF of 6 and 8 is 2.
Worked example
Convert 11/4 to a mixed number.
11 ÷ 4 = 2 remainder 3
Mixed number: 2 3/4
A second example, going the other direction: convert 3 2/5 to an improper fraction.
3 × 5 + 2 = 17, over the same denominator
Improper fraction: 17/5
Common mistake
A common mistake is changing the denominator during the conversion. It stays fixed the whole time — for 11/4, the answer keeps the 4 as its denominator (2 3/4), it never becomes something else.
