What is a remainder?
The remainder is whatever is left over after dividing one number by another as many whole times as possible. If 47 ÷ 6 = 7 with 5 left over, then 5 is the remainder.
How do you calculate a remainder?
Divide, keep only the whole number part of the result (drop anything after the decimal point), multiply that whole number by the divisor, then subtract from the original dividend. What's left is the remainder.
What does it mean if the remainder is 0?

Is the remainder the same as the modulo operation?
For two positive numbers, yes. They diverge with negative numbers: mathematical modulo always returns a result with the same sign as the divisor, while many programming languages' remainder operator (%) returns a result with the same sign as the dividend. For example, −7 divided by 3 gives a remainder of −1 in most languages, but a modulo of 2.
Can the remainder be equal to or larger than the divisor?
No — a correctly computed remainder is always smaller than the divisor (and never negative when dividing a positive number by a positive number). If your remainder comes out equal to or bigger than the divisor, the division wasn't carried far enough.
