How This Is Calculated
Every day from the start date through the end date is checked, and only Monday through Friday are counted — Saturdays and Sundays are excluded, and holidays are not accounted for. If your date range spans a public holiday, subtract those days manually, since holidays vary by country, state, and even by company.
A common mistake is estimating business days by dividing the total calendar days by 7 and multiplying by 5. That shortcut only holds up over whole weeks — over a short range, which weekday the range starts on skews the result more than the ratio accounts for.
Worked example
From January 1, 2024 (a Monday) through January 31, 2024 (a Wednesday).
23 business days, out of 31 total calendar days — four full weekends (Jan 6-7, 13-14, 20-21, 27-28) plus three extra weekdays at the end fall outside the weekday count.
From February 1, 2024 (a Thursday) through February 29, 2024 (Leap Day, also a Thursday) — a 29-day range instead of February's usual 28.
21 business days, out of 29 total calendar days: four full weekends (8 weekend days) plus the extra leap day itself, which lands on a weekday and counts.
And the shortcut from above: a 10-day range starting on a Friday (say Friday, January 5 through Sunday, January 14, 2024) contains only 6 weekdays — noticeably fewer than the roughly 7.1 that 10 ÷ 7 × 5 would suggest, because the range opens and closes on weekend edges.

Does this calculator account for holidays?
No — it counts weekdays (Monday through Friday) only, and doesn't know about public holidays, which vary by country and even by company. Subtract holidays manually if your date range includes any.
Are both the start and end date included in the count?
Yes, if both fall on a weekday. The calculator counts every weekday from the start date through the end date, inclusive of both endpoints.
Why would I need business days instead of calendar days?
Business days matter for anything tied to work schedules — shipping estimates, contract deadlines, or payment processing windows that explicitly exclude weekends.
Can I just divide the calendar days by 7 and multiply by 5?
Not reliably. That ratio only works out over full weeks — a short range that happens to start or end near a weekend can be far off. A 10-day range can contain as few as 6 weekdays or as many as 8, depending on which day of the week it starts on, even though 10 ÷ 7 × 5 always comes out to about 7.1.
Does a leap year change how business days are counted?
Only indirectly — Leap Day (February 29) is counted as a business day whenever it lands on a weekday, exactly like any other date. It doesn't get special treatment, which means a February that includes Leap Day has one more potential weekday than a non-leap February.
