How This Is Calculated
Days until = the date you enter minus today's date, counted as whole calendar days. Each date is resolved to its real position on the calendar before subtracting, so the total is accurate through any mix of short months, long months, and leap years in between — nothing here is a rough 30-day-month approximation.
A common mistake with countdowns is treating today as the first day of the count. If something is due in "7 days," the target date is 7 days from now, not 6 — today itself is day zero, and the count only reaches the target once 7 full calendar days have actually passed.
Worked example
Say today is January 20, 2028, and you're counting down to March 10, 2028.
That range crosses February 29, 2028 (2028 is a leap year, since 2028 ÷ 4 = 507 with no remainder and it isn't a century year), so it's 11 (rest of Jan) + 29 (Feb) + 10 (into March) = 50 days — one more than the 49 days the same date span would run in a non-leap year.
Now say today is December 20, 2025, and the target is January 5, 2026 — a countdown that crosses the year boundary.
11 days to close out December + 5 days into January = 16 days.

Today counts as day zero — the countdown reaches 0 on the target date itself, not the day before.

The calculator still works — it shows how many days since that date instead, since a past date has a negative days-until value.
Does the countdown adjust automatically for leap years?
Yes. If a February 29 falls anywhere between today and your target date, it's counted like any other calendar day — the calculator works from real calendar positions, not a fixed 365-day-per-year estimate, so leap days are never missed or double-counted.
Why does my manual countdown come out one day different?
Usually because of inclusive counting — treating today as "day 1" instead of "day 0." This calculator starts the countdown at 0 on today's date, so a target date exactly one week away reads as 7 days, not 8.
