How to Calculate a Discount

Final price = original price − (original price × discount %).

Worked example

An $80 item at 25% off.

Discount: 80 × 0.25 = $20

Final price: 80 − 20 = $60

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you calculate a discount?

Multiply the original price by the discount percentage (as a decimal) to get the discount amount, then subtract that from the original price to get the final price.

How do you find the original price from a sale price?

Divide the sale price by (1 − discount percentage as a decimal). For example, a $60 price after a 25% discount means the original was 60 ÷ 0.75 = $80.

Does discount stacking add percentages together?

No. Two stacked discounts of 20% and 10% don't equal 30% off — each discount applies to the already-reduced price, so the combined effect is smaller than the sum.
