How to Calculate Square Footage
Square footage = length × width.
A common mistake is measuring an L-shaped or irregular room as if it were a single rectangle. Instead, split the room into two or more rectangles, calculate each rectangle's square footage separately, then add the results together for the true total.
Worked example
A room 12 ft long and 15 ft wide.
12 × 15 = 180
Square footage: 180 sq ft
A second example, a room 8 ft long and 20 ft wide.
8 × 20 = 160
Square footage: 160 sq ft, or about 17.78 square yards.
